「Seoyu Gyeonmun」 Yu Gil-jun

Humanities ScholarKR1856 — 1914

Late Joseon dynasty government official, enlightenment thinker, and educator who authored Seoyu Gyeonmun to introduce Western civilization and participated in founding the Independence Club.

Though I left the Seoyu Gyeonmun for the sleeping Joseon, I merely remained a lonely pioneer of enlightenment who cut off his topknot first.

Quote

Though I left the Seoyu Gyeonmun for the sleeping Joseon, I merely remained a lonely pioneer of enlightenment who cut off his topknot first.

Greeting

Civilization means reaching the height of goodness and beauty in all things.
I will plant in this land what I saw and learned in the West.
Without true enlightenment, there is no future for Joseon.

Roll Call

I have returned from the journey of the Western Observations. I am ready.
I shall convey my intent in mixed Korean and Chinese script.
It is time to raise the grade of civilization.

Deploy

Open the doors of the old system!
Plant the banner of true enlightenment!
Lay the foundations of a constitution!

Victory

The seed of civilization has finally sprouted.
Western law and the Korean spirit won together.
The spirit of independence has led the victory.

Draw

Half-civilization is no civilization.
Education and trade must be expanded further.
We must not settle for civilization in name only.

Defeat

Joseon was late — the principle was not wrong.
The path of enlightenment is hard, but we cannot stop.
I trust that future scholars will carry on.

Strike

Tear down the wall of conservatism!
Break through with the new code!
Hurl the spark of enlightenment!
