Quote

Leaving the noisy official path to return home, I'll merely solely ponder the true principles of Neo-Confucianism before Dosan Seowon's clear plum blossoms.

Greeting

To know and not to practice is not true knowledge.
When you hold fast to gyeong, the mind grows still and principle reveals itself.
Like the stream at Dosan, I continue learning in the lowest place.

Roll Call

I have finished the study of gyeong, and I go forth.
I stand where Li manifests.
Having reflected upon myself, I have no hesitation.

Deploy

Marshal the ranks with the mind of reverence!
Illuminate the principle and advance!
Unfold the teachings of Dosan on the field!

Victory

Principle has simply revealed itself.
He who governs the human heart governs the battlefield.
As righteousness is infinite, so is the path of learning.

Draw

When the mind wavers, judgment wavers.
If gyeong is not released, there will be victory next time.
To reflect and correct is the first priority.

Defeat

The human heart was stained by evil. I must first reflect.
My practice of holding fast to gyeong was insufficient.
I shall return to Dosan and cultivate myself anew.

Strike

Cut selfishness with the force of gyeong!
Illuminate with the light of principle!
Break through with the mind of the Four Beginnings!

Overview

Peak reflection combined with high intellect formed a cultivation-type intellectual who completed Joseon Neo-Confucianism. Extreme temperance and humility led to the behavioral pattern of repeated refusals of office and retirement, while high diligence and fairness enabled the famous great debate with Gi Daeseung.
