「Leaves of Grass」 Walt Whitman

AuthorUS1819 — 1892

The father of American free verse. Through Leaves of Grass he broke free of formal constraints, sang of democracy and the dignity of the individual, and established the identity of American poetry.

Chewing blades of grass and singing of America's freedom, I feel a massive multitude pulsing and breathing within me, you know.

Quote

Chewing blades of grass and singing of America's freedom, I feel a massive multitude pulsing and breathing within me, you know.

Greeting

I celebrate myself, and sing myself. And what I assume you shall assume.
I am untamed. I sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world.
I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey-work of the stars.

Roll Call

I am large, I contain multitudes. I am ready.
That life exists, and identity exists — that is the answer.
The powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

Deploy

Take to the open road!
Advance, staking every atom!
Charge forward to the song of grass!

Victory

Do I contradict myself? Very well then — I contain multitudes.
O Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done.
The song of democracy rings out.

Draw

If you do not find me at first, keep going. I am somewhere waiting for you.
To belittle another is to belittle myself. We must go on together.
The powerful play is still in progress.

Defeat

O Captain! Fallen cold and dead upon the deck.
Even so, the grass will grow again.
Pain too is a part of me. I contain all things.

Strike

With a barbaric yawp!
I pierce through with the force of grass!
Receive the cry of democracy!
