Taiko Toyotomi Hideyoshi

CommanderJP1537 — 1598

Warlord and statesman of Japan's Sengoku period. Rose from peasant origins to unify Japan, though his invasion of Korea ultimately failed.

If the bird on the branch does not sing of its own accord as it should, I will inflict pain to forcefully make it sing immediately.

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

He rose from peasant origins to unify Japan. He studied the tea ceremony and kept Sen no Rikyu as his tea master, but not to savor the taste of tea. He bestowed prized tea utensils upon vassals, presided over tea gatherings before the Emperor, and hosted the grand Kitano Tea Ceremony for the masses. The wabi aesthetic was not modesty but the prerogative of one who could stage modesty. The golden tea room is the material evidence of this paradox.

His obsession with Noh was even more overt. During a brief stay at Nagoya Castle he memorized the shite lead roles of ten Noh plays and performed them himself, staging sixteen pieces over three days. He forced daimyo to take the waki supporting roles. He performed before the Emperor and even wrote Noh scripts himself. By claiming the protagonist's role on stage, he extended his real-world authority into artistic narrative.

The cultivation that other warlords absorbed from childhood, he acquired as an adult out of political necessity. He built a golden tea room, monopolized the Noh stage, and defined Momoyama culture under his own name. He was a ruler who refused to be an audience before art.

Quote

If the bird on the branch does not sing of its own accord as it should, I will inflict pain to forcefully make it sing immediately.

Greeting

If the cuckoo won't sing, I'll make it sing.
A sandal-wearing monkey united all of Japan. Nothing is impossible.
Swords alone cannot take the realm. You must use your head.

Roll Call

The end of ambition is the realm itself. It is not time to stop.
I have found the enemy's weakness. Now it's just execution.
Soldiers, trust this monkey. I have never lost.

Deploy

All forces, storm the castle! We drown them out!
The best victory is won without fighting. Surround them!
Forward! I carry on Nobunaga's will and divide the realm!

Victory

From sandals to Kampaku. Today I climb one more step.
The battle was won before it began. I merely confirmed it on the field.
Unification is within reach. The cuckoo has begun to sing.

Draw

Failing to win is the same as losing. I change the method.
If force won't work, use wit. If wit won't work, use time.
Target their rear. No need to fight only head-on.

Defeat

Even a monkey falls from the tree. But it climbs back up.
The seas of Korea stopped me. I acknowledge what must be acknowledged.
I came like the dew, I go like the dew — such is life.

Strike

Push through!
Hit the flank!
Smash the gates!

Overview

Supreme command and charm fused with extreme optimism produced a historically rare upwardly mobile commander who unified Japan from peasant origins. High intellect led to administrative innovations; low temperance and humility resulted in the self-destructive structure of the Korean invasions and grandiose self-display.
