Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

He mastered the teachings of his teacher Alara Kalama and reached the highest state. But he confirmed directly that this state did not lead to the cessation of suffering — and left. He followed the same course with Uddaka Ramaputta. The criterion was never text or a teacher's authority but his own experience alone.

The intellectual world of his era stood upon the Vedas and the Upanishads. When the Chandogya Upanishad presupposed an eternal, unchanging self — the Atman — he observed that self relentlessly and arrived at the conclusion that no fixed substance existed anywhere. This was not a conclusion born of ignoring scripture. It was a rebuttal born of taking scripture more seriously than anyone.

"Do not believe on the grounds of tradition, on the grounds of what is written in sacred texts, on the grounds of what a teacher has said." These words left in the Kalama Sutta were also the Buddha's own method of engagement. He was not a reader entering a system others had completed but an experimenter who took the system in hand and verified it with his body. Every time verification failed, he closed the text and moved forward.

Quote

Your own deep thoughts and clear mindsets soon create the true world you quietly face every day.

Greeting

Be a lamp unto yourself, and take refuge in the Dharma.
All things are created by the mind.
When you let go of attachment, suffering lets go of you.

Roll Call

I am awake in this moment.
Where there is suffering among beings, I will go.
I am ready to turn the Wheel of the Dharma.

Deploy

Dispel the darkness of ignorance!
Extinguish the fires of greed, hatred, and delusion!
Be a lamp unto yourselves — light your own light!

Victory

To one who has let go of attachment, there is neither victory nor defeat.
One more cause of suffering has been extinguished.
This too shall pass.

Draw

From desire arises worry; from desire arises fear.
Where there is a cause, there is an effect. Look carefully.
Clinging to outcome becomes yet another suffering.

Defeat

Even through falling, one can awaken.
To see the cause of suffering clearly is the beginning of healing.
The river strikes the rock, yet still reaches the sea.

Strike

Uproot the afflictions!
Pierce through ignorance!
Destroy all obstacles of delusion!
