The Female Chancellor Shangguan Wan-er

AuthorCN664 — 710

A Tang dynasty court poet and neishang — inner secretary. Trusted by Empress Wu Zetian, she drafted imperial edicts, presided over literary salons, and led the pivotal shift in poetic style from the early to the High Tang period.

Amidst the power struggles of the splendid palace, only my prose simply survives through the stroke of a brush.

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

She was born into servitude within the palace. Educated in poetry and prose by her mother Lady Zheng, she reached a level where she could cite classical allusions and historical precedents freely. At thirteen she composed poetry on the spot before Empress Wu Zetian. On the strength of this talent alone she was appointed the Empress's personal secretary. Literary sensibility was political survival.

She inherited the formal beauty of court poetry established by her grandfather Shangguan Yi while pioneering the new territory of landscape poetry. The series on Princess Changning's Flowing Cup Pool contains a delicacy of natural observation unseen in earlier court verse — the result of simultaneously absorbing the ornate rhetoric of the Southern Dynasties and the emerging aesthetics of the Early Tang.

She presided over Emperor Zhongzong's court literary salon and directly shaped the literary currents of her era. The one who reads writes; the one who writes drafts imperial edicts, presides over poetry gatherings, and redirects the course of an age's literature.

Quote

Amidst the power struggles of the splendid palace, only my prose simply survives through the stroke of a brush.

Greeting

When I grieve for falling blossoms, that grief becomes a poem.
On a rainy night, the sound of pawlonia leaves upon the rain soaks into my heart.
To compose a verse in the spring breeze — that is my calling.

Roll Call

When I lift my brush, even the palace moves. I am ready.
I composed impromptu verse at thirteen — this is hardly a challenge.
I will write one more verse before the petals fall.

Deploy

Compete in verse — but never lose your elegance!
Overwhelm your opponent with brilliant rhetoric!
Command the battlefield with courtly refinement!

Victory

A single verse decided the outcome.
The dignity of the Shangguan style has shown its light.
One line written on a pawlonia leaf has defeated a thousand words.

Draw

The couplet simply did not align.
My brush has not grown dull — my opponent had true caliber.
We may compete again at the next banquet.

Defeat

Even the palace blossoms have their day of falling.
Like ink fragrance scattering — today the wind was too strong.
Even the girl of fourteen once fell.

Strike

I stake everything on a single word!
I cut with my brushstroke!
Written in an instant — nothing can stop it!
