Timurid Renaissance Shah Rukh

PoliticianIR1377 — 1447

The third ruler of the Timurid Empire. He stabilized the conquests of his father Timur and led an Islamic cultural renaissance centered on Herat.

Since cold, armed force alone cannot rule a vast empire, the beautiful light of cultivated learning and arts will be needed, right.

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Shah Rukh was the ruler who restored with books and buildings what his father Timur had destroyed. The tool chosen by the son of the conqueror was not the sword but the manuscript. Making Herat his capital, he gathered scholars, calligraphers, miniaturists, and architects, and this city became the most splendid cultural center in the Islamic world of the fifteenth century. Manuscripts produced in Herat during his reign reached the highest level of the age in calligraphy, miniature painting, and gilded binding.

Shah Rukh's mode of appreciation was patronage and collection. In 1411 he built the Shahrukhiya madrasa and invited the foremost scholars and mystics of the day; in the royal library, he had works from diverse cultural spheres collected and translated. His consort Goharshad independently maintained her own library and patronized manuscript production. The cultural investment of this couple brought to life such masters of miniature painting as Bihzad and Mirak Naqqash.

The Timurid cultural renaissance was a conscious project to transform the legacy of conquest into cultural legitimacy. For Shah Rukh, books were simultaneously objects to be read and national products to be created and preserved. The scholars and artists who emerged from Herat's libraries and madrasas sowed seeds that would later bear fruit in the cultures of the Mughal, Safavid, and Ottoman empires.

Quote

Since cold, armed force alone cannot rule a vast empire, the beautiful light of cultivated learning and arts will be needed, right.

Greeting

The gates of Herat are open to those who embrace learning and art.
What my father's sword destroyed, I rebuild with books and bricks.
Peaceful trade is the true strength of an empire.

Roll Call

I shall honor the will of Herat.
I will send a letter before a sword.
I am ready.

Deploy

Send the envoy first — the army follows!
Fortify the walls and guard the trade routes!
Raise the banner of Herat!

Victory

Allah's will was with us.
More precious than war is the peace that follows.
I shall devote this victory to the flourishing of learning.

Draw

What the sword could not finish, a letter shall.
There is still room for negotiation.
Next time, I shall end it without bloodshed.

Defeat

The burden of failing to preserve my father's empire is great.
What has fallen can be rebuilt.
Herat, at least, I will hold.

Strike

The heir of Timur does not retreat!
Advance!
Make the invaders of the trade route pay!

Overview

High intellect and benevolence combined with cultural collectivism to produce the greatest renaissance in Central Asian history. The reflective shift from Timur's conquest model to Herat as a scholarly centre is the defining feature; moderate martial and command stats paired with peaceful diplomacy create a balanced profile of an empire-sustaining rather than empire-building ruler.
