Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

He read the Upanishads in Sanskrit, the Quran in Arabic, and the Bible in its Hebrew and Greek originals. Reading primary texts directly in five or more languages was an act of stubborn determination to bypass the distortions of translation and reach the essence of each text. Ram Mohan Roy did not commit to a single scripture. He placed multiple scriptures side by side and extracted their shared principles—pioneering, through self-study, the methodology of comparative religion.

The principle he found in the Upanishads—ekam evadvitiyam, "the One without a second"—became the fixed point against which all his reading was measured. He set the monotheism of the Quran, the ethics of Christianity, and the monism of Vedanta on a single horizon for comparison. He rejected the divinity of Christ yet praised highly the ethics of the Sermon on the Mount. His method of reading was to maintain the eye of analysis before scripture, never kneeling.

This comparative reading provided the intellectual foundation for the movement to abolish sati, the self-immolation of widows. Through analysis of the primary texts he proved that nowhere in the Hindu scriptures is the practice commanded. His strategy was to defeat custom with scripture itself. For Ram Mohan Roy, reading meant wielding the authority of scripture to dismantle the abuses perpetrated in scripture's name.

Quote

Noble truth and true virtue absolutely do not belong under the arrogant shadow of wealth and power!

Greeting

Education is the only light that drives out ignorance.
Truth and virtue are not the exclusive domain of the wealthy and powerful.
We must stand against every institution that suppresses human reason.

Roll Call

There is no hesitation on the road of reform.
I am ready to follow the light of reason.
Even one life can share the burden of society.

Deploy

Break the chains of cruel custom!
Raise the torch of reason high!
Silence in the face of oppression is complicity. Move forward!

Victory

Truth has at last proved itself.
If even one person has been freed from oppression, that is enough.
A victory for reason. I accept it with humility.

Draw

The seeds of reform do not bear fruit all at once.
I must refine the argument and persuade again.
It only takes time for society to open its eyes.

Defeat

Defeated, but my conviction is unbroken.
It is not that cruel custom has won — the fight is simply not over.
The next generation will carry this forward.

Strike

Tear down the wall of ignorance!
Burn away superstition!
Charge for the dignity of humanity!
