LeaderIQ717 — 801

A pioneering female saint of Islamic Sufism. Born a slave in Basra and later freed, she taught a mysticism of unconditional love for God.

O God, if I worship You from fear of Hell, burn me in Hell. And if I worship You in hope of Paradise, exclude me from Paradise.

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Born a slave in Basra, Rabia al-Adawiyya had no formal education. She encountered the Quran through oral recitation alone. Within that constraint, she arrived at a stance that set aside both the warnings and the promises of scripture: she would not worship out of fear of hell, nor in hope of paradise.

At the center of her mysticism stands Quran 50:16—"We are closer to him than his jugular vein." From this verse came her certainty that no intermediary was needed between God and the human soul. She told fellow seekers, "If you did not love the world, you would not mention it so often," cutting through the gap between spoken renunciation and actual attachment.

She left no written record, yet the poems and prayers passed down orally became the archetype for Sufi verse. The poetry of divine love that runs from Hallaj through Rumi to Hafez stands on the principle of unconditional love that Rabia drew from scripture.

Quote

Greeting

Only love is the path to God.
I love without hope of reward and without fear of punishment.
All things in the world vanish, but love alone remains.
