All Is Number Pythagoras

ScientistGRBC 570 — BC 495

A mathematician and philosopher from Samos. He established the doctrine of number as the principle of all things and founded the Pythagorean school.

Since the universe consists of invisible eternal numbers' harmony, even that majestic celestial sphere merely rotates in beautiful musical proportions.

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Pythagoras left the island of Samos and went to Egypt. After twenty-two years of studying mathematics, astronomy, and mystery rites under the priests of Thebes, he was taken to Babylon as a captive when Cambyses II invaded Egypt. There he spent another twelve years learning astrology and numerology from the Chaldean Magi. Pythagorean learning was not the knowledge system of a single region but the result of the intellectual traditions of Egypt, Babylon, and Greece fusing within a single individual.

The story of passing a smithy and discovering mathematical ratios in the pitch differences of the hammers reveals Pythagoras's receptive stance. He did not hear sound — he heard the numbers within the sound. The conviction that "geometry lies in the vibration of strings, and music lies in the intervals of the celestial spheres" was the convergence into a single worldview of decades of observation accumulated in Egyptian temples and Babylonian observatories.

The school he founded at Croton was a secret society-like community. He brought over directly the prohibitions of the Egyptian priests and imposed the disciplines of vegetarianism, silence, and communal life. For Pythagoras, learning was not the acquisition of knowledge but the purification of the soul, and number was the principle of all things and the key to understanding divine order. This thinking gave Plato's theory of Forms its decisive influence.

Quote

Since the universe consists of invisible eternal numbers' harmony, even that majestic celestial sphere merely rotates in beautiful musical proportions.

Greeting

All is number.
In the vibration of the strings lies the harmony of the universe.
Number governs the cosmos.

Roll Call

I hear the music of the spheres. I am ready.
The ratios are set. Let us begin.
I have drawn the pentagram.

Deploy

Form the ranks with the harmony of number!
Advance with the ratio of the octave!
Unleash the power of the right triangle!

Victory

The harmony of numbers has proven our victory.
The square of the hypotenuse has given the answer.
The music of the spheres was on our side.

Draw

There are things that cannot be expressed as ratios.
The place where harmony breaks must be found.
The secrets of number are not yet fully revealed.

Defeat

An irrational number — a crack has appeared in the harmony.
I placed too much faith in the order of number.
I should have preserved the secret of number in silence.

Strike

Pierce with the power of the right angle!
Strike with the ratio of numbers!
Pierce in the name of the theorem!

Overview

Supreme intellect and high charm combine to form a school-founding structure that elevated mathematics to religious truth. Strong command and community orientation converted mathematical inquiry from individual research to collective spiritual pursuit, and this mystical passion formed a unique configuration that expanded a single theorem into a cosmology.
