Politician Pericles's reading records
Athenian Democracy Pericles
The statesman who led Athens's golden age. He completed democracy and led the construction of the Parthenon, declaring the ideals of Athens through his Funeral Oration.
“Building the dazzling Parthenon on the Acropolis, I merely lay the golden age of great Athenian democracy with elegant eloquence.”
Cultural Journey
How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life
It was no coincidence that the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides flourished intensively in Athens's golden age. Under Pericles's patronage, Sophocles was even appointed to the rank of general, and the tragic competition was elevated to the greatest civic event of the city-state. Pericles did not censor the content of tragedy. When Sophocles's *Antigone* put on stage the collision between state power and individual conscience, this was also a challenge to Pericles's own democracy. Yet he allowed this tension. He saw the questions that tragedy raised as proof of democracy's health.
The construction of the Parthenon was the embodiment in architecture of Pericles's mode of appreciation. In this project—overseeing the sculptures of Pheidias and the design of Ictinus—Pericles performed the role of artistic director. For him, art did not remain in the realm of beauty but was an act of binding citizens together and physically declaring the ideals of the city. For Pericles, who declared in the Funeral Oration that "the secret of happiness is freedom, and the secret of freedom is courage," tragedy and architecture were educational devices for cultivating that courage.
