A country's wealth is like an un-drying well; it fills when drawn and circulated in the market, but rots when stagnant, you see.

Quote

A country's wealth is like an un-drying well; it fills when drawn and circulated in the market, but rots when stagnant, you see.

Greeting

What is not used is lost; what is lost is never made.
The only path to saving the nation is Northern Learning.
It is not frugality but consumption that drives production.

Roll Call

I shall put to use what I have learned from Yanjing.
I shall prove the utility of carts and ships.
I stand under the banner of Practical Learning.

Deploy

Build the carts and pave the roads!
Tear down the walls of outdated custom!
Open the gates of trade!

Victory

Practicality has defeated empty formality.
When the people's lives improve, that is the victory.
The spirit of Northern Learning has finally carried the day.

Draw

The wall of conservatism is simply thick.
I must diagnose the root of the problem again.
Though the sorrows of a lesser son run deep, the will does not break.

Defeat

Even in exile, the will of Northern Learning lives on.
I cannot be allowed to vanish in obscurity.
If it is useful, one should learn even from the barbarians.

Strike

Smash the old abuses!
Sharpen the blade of practicality!
Break through the gate of trade!

Overview

High intellect and diligence combined with progressive disposition drew the blueprint for Joseon reform through Pukhak uui. Courage and fairness enabled challenging the privileged class beyond the limits of secondary son status, while low temperance and humility resulted in the sharpness of reform arguments and friction in actual politics.
