Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Michael VIII perceived the recapture of Constantinople as the fulfillment of his personal narrative. In his childhood, a lullaby his sister sang already contained a prophecy that he would "enter through the Golden Gate and reclaim the city." He fulfilled this narrative literally, and in 1261 recaptured Constantinople from the Latin Empire to found the Palaiologos dynasty. A boy who grew up hearing a narrative made that narrative reality.

Michael's cultural appreciation took the form of a revival of Greek classical learning. He rebuilt the University of Constantinople and patronized scholars, laying the foundation of what is known as the Palaiologan Renaissance. The work of scholars such as George Pachymeres and Maximus Planudes in editing and annotating classical texts began under Michael's cultural policy. This restoration of Greek classical learning would later exert a direct influence on the Italian Renaissance.

The mode of appreciation of Michael VIII rested on the recognition that preserving the classics and recovering the legitimacy of the empire were one and the same act. Relaying the bricks of Constantinople and re-editing manuscripts of Plato and Aristotle were the same action. The revival of the empire could be completed only through the recovery of cultural continuity, not through military victory alone.

Quote

Destroying the Latin thieves, I will eternally rebuild the brilliant glory of fallen Byzantium under the shining cross.

Greeting

After fifty-seven years, I have reclaimed Constantinople. Rome is reborn.
Diplomacy preserves the empire longer than the sword.
The bells of Hagia Sophia ring once more.

Roll Call

The first muster of the Palaiologos dynasty.
The alliance with Genoa is in place.
The time has come to wash away the remnants of the Latin Empire.

Deploy

Over the walls of Constantinople!
Forward with the Genoese fleet!
Raise the eagle of Byzantium once more!

Victory

Victory won on the Feast of the Theotokos. It is God's will.
I shall hold my coronation in Hagia Sophia.
Now the rebuilding of the empire begins.

Draw

This is a problem diplomacy can solve.
The card of negotiation with the Pope has not been played yet.
The empire's strength is not what it was. We must be prudent.

Defeat

The reclaimed empire wavers again.
Too many enemies. The pressure from east and west is overwhelming.
The name of the Palaiologoi is not easily broken.

Strike

Reclaim the glory of Byzantium!
Charge for Constantinople!
Fight as heirs of Rome!

Overview

Peak command and high intellect combined with boldness to achieve the historic restoration of the Byzantine Empire. Low temperance, fairness, and humility manifest in usurpation and persecution, revealing a cold-blooded balance that readily sacrificed ethical constraints for the survival and glory of the empire.
