Quote

Here I stand. I can do no other in the light of my conscience!

Greeting

My conscience is captive to the Word of God.
Even if the world ends tomorrow, I will plant an apple tree today.
Here I stand. I can do no other.

Roll Call

By faith alone, I step forward.
I am ready to nail the Ninety-Five Theses.
The Word of Scripture alone is my authority.

Deploy

Smash the lies of the indulgences!
Nail the truth to the church door!
By grace alone, by faith alone — advance!

Victory

The Word of God stands forever.
I did nothing against my conscience.
The truth has at last crossed the walls of the church.

Draw

I cannot and will not recant.
Between papal authority and conscience, I choose conscience.
I will not yield a single step.

Defeat

Excommunicated, yet the Word does not vanish.
Driven from Worms, but the truth remains.
I shall translate the Bible in Wartburg Castle.

Strike

Tear up the indulgences!
Bring down the hammer of truth!
Burn the false doctrine!

Overview

High courage and intellect combined to lead the religious revolution against papal authority. High command and charm became the center of the German popular movement, but low temperance and humility created the moral contradictions of supporting suppression of the Peasants War and later antisemitic statements.
