Founder of Han Liu Bang

CommanderCNBC 256 — BC 195

The founding emperor of the Han dynasty. Rising from humble origins, he defeated Xiang Yu and unified the realm, laying the foundation for four hundred years of Han rule.

Though far lacking compared to Zhang Liang's brain or Han Xin's strategy, I'm truly the best at winning people over to firmly grasp the world, you know.

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Liu Bang is known as a man who scorned learning, yet his cultural sensibility operated on an entirely different register from Xiang Yu's. The anecdote of snatching a Confucian scholar's cap and urinating in it is well known, but after unifying the realm he also returned to his hometown of Pei, beat a zhu himself, and sang the *Song of the Great Wind*: "A great wind rises and the clouds fly — how do I find brave men to guard the four corners of the realm?" These three lines are rated as among the most concise and yet profound lyric poems in Chinese literary history.

Liu Bang's mode of engagement is "appropriation." He does not read systematically, but he absorbs the knowledge of those around him as his own. The process of listening to, selecting, and adopting Zhang Liang's military strategy, Xiao He's administration, and Chen Ping's schemes is itself Liu Bang's unique act of reading. His self-assessment — "I only knew how to make use of men of outstanding talent" — is not modesty but a precise awareness of the essence of engagement. Listening to another's thought and judging it — that is, for Liu Bang, what reading is. Xiang Yu lacked this capacity.

Growing up within the tradition of Chu folk songs and poetry, Liu Bang had no hesitation in expressing emotion through music and song. The scene of weeping as he sang the *Song of the Great Wind* was not the weakness of an emperor but the natural expression of a commoner's sensibility tempered through battlefields and drinking parties. To Liu Bang, art was not something of the study but something learned through direct encounter in the field of living. The four hundred years of the Han Empire were built upon this fieldcraft.

Quote

Though far lacking compared to Zhang Liang's brain or Han Xin's strategy, I'm truly the best at winning people over to firmly grasp the world, you know.

Greeting

A great wind rises, the clouds fly — I won the land and came home.
Zhang Liang's wit, Han Xin's tactics, Xiao He's logistics. I just knew how to use people.
A rowdy lad from Pei County became the Son of Heaven. Life is full of surprises.

Roll Call

If Xiang Yu comes with brute force, I meet him with the right people. Get ready.
No need for complicated ceremony. Keep it simple. We march.
Brothers who shared a drink with me — will you follow me once more?

Deploy

Give Han Xin the left flank. Advance!
Three laws are enough. The sword speaks the rest. Charge!
Sing Chu songs from all four sides! Break their spirit!

Victory

Sing Da Feng Ge! Our might spreads to all four seas!
It wasn't me. The people who knew what to do did it.
This is the brothers' achievement. Bring out the wine.

Draw

No need to meet Xiang Yu's strength head-on. Let's go around.
No rush. Time is on our side.
We need to buy Han Xin time to flank. Hold.

Defeat

Lost fifty-six thousand at Pengcheng and I'm still standing here.
I know I'm no general. That's why I have Han Xin.
One loss and it's over? Gather the people again and we're back.

Strike

Charge! Show them the spirit of Han!
They're surrounded! Push through!
Encircle Xiang Yu!
