Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

King Seongdeok used culture as a tool of governance throughout his thirty-four-year reign, the longest in all of Unified Silla. Buddhist scriptures and Confucian classics were for him not instruments of personal cultivation but practical texts for legitimizing royal power and refining institutions. His establishment of the Medical Doctor and Arithmetic Doctor posts in 717 and installation of Korea's first water clock in 718 were the results of translating the ideal governance found in the classics into real administration.

Cultural appreciation in King Seongdeok's era manifested as the activity of the entire court rather than the king alone. Kim Dae-mun of Hansanju province's composition in 704 of *Hwarang Segi*, *Gyerim Japjeon*, *Goseung Jeon*, and *Akbon* were products of the environment created by royal scholarly patronage. King Seongdeok institutionally promoted the import and education of knowledge by sending princes and royal brothers to serve at the Tang court and enroll in its national academy.

The cultural richness of Silla's golden age was the achievement not of a king who read the classics but of a king who embodied their teachings in the well-field system, the training of officials, and the educational system. It was no coincidence that the Emille Bell was cast after his death. It was the cultural capacity accumulated over thirty-four years bearing fruit in material form. King Seongdeok's appreciation was not the act of reading but the act of creating institutions itself.

Quote

By soothing the people's hunger and letting arts bloom, I simply establish a true golden age on this land.

Greeting

If the people starve, what use is the king?
I shall distribute the fields and stabilize the people's livelihood.
A golden age does not come on its own.

Roll Call

I shall obey the royal command.
I step forward for the sake of the people.
As I divide the fields, so shall I share my strength.

Deploy

Strengthen the border defenses.
Move according to the precepts of the Hundred Officials.
Go forth to protect the people's livelihood.

Victory

The golden age has been preserved.
When the people are at peace, that itself is victory.
I shall not forget the toil of the soldiers.

Draw

I shall not judge too hastily.
I shall tour the borders and examine the people's sentiment.
We withdrew, but we protected the people's homesteads.

Defeat

I cannot face the people.
I am worried for the hungry people.
I shall pardon, and ensure this never happens again.

Strike

Drive back those who trespass our borders!
Do not let them set foot on Silla's soil!
Counterattack!
