Cultural Journey
How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life
Ashvaghosha was the poet, philosopher, playwright, and musician of Kanishka's court. Nagarjuna established the philosophy of emptiness through the *Mulamadhyamakakarika* of the Madhyamaka school. Kanishka did not directly create their ideas, but he created the space in which they could work. The first representation of the Buddha in human form in Gandharan art was also the product of this cultural patronage. The fusion of the Greek sculptural tradition and Indian religious iconography would have been impossible without the multiculturalism of Kanishka's court. The erection of a 400-foot stupa in Peshawar was the architectural expression of this fusion.
To Kanishka, culture was not an object of engagement but the adhesive of empire. The transmission of Mahayana Buddhism to China via the Silk Road was the result of his territorial expansion and Buddhist patronage overlapping, and the fact that Buddhist monks from Gandhara reached China through the Tarim Basin was because the Kushan Empire's passage was open. It is a case of contributing to the history of civilization not through the act of reading but through the act of making things read.
