Dasan Jeong Yak-yong

Humanities ScholarKR1762 — 1836

Great scholar and reformer who synthesized the practical learning movement of late Joseon, proposing social reform plans through extensive writings including Mongminsimseo and Heumheumsinseo.

Trapped in the old Dasan Chodang, swallowing lonely solitude, I merely silently and uprightly build a massive and sturdy framework of Silhak to revive ailing Joseon.

Quote

Trapped in the old Dasan Chodang, swallowing lonely solitude, I merely silently and uprightly build a massive and sturdy framework of Silhak to revive ailing Joseon.

Greeting

All under heaven is not for one man alone to accomplish.
Diligence and frugality — these two words are better than fertile land.
A magistrate exists for the people, not to rule over them.

Roll Call

Even in exile at Gangjin, I never set down the brush.
I stand with the teachings of the Mongmin Simseo in my heart.
I go forth with the spirit of seeking truth from fact.

Deploy

Establish the statecraft and the code!
Build the walls with the principle of the crane!
Illuminate the field with the light of practical learning!

Victory

Practical use has defeated empty theory.
I won because I listened even to the lowest man's opinion.
Only those who never bent their great ambition stand here.

Draw

Unless the abuses of the clerks are corrected, it will not end.
A single calamity must not break one's purpose.
I must open the Gyeongse Yupyo once more.

Defeat

The pain of an unfulfilled purpose hurts more than exile.
I will not lose the spirit that soars like a hawk.
I shall engrave this defeat as one records a case in the Heumheum Sinseo.

Strike

Uproot the decayed system!
Lift the heavy burden like a crane!
Cut corruption with the magistrate's blade!
