「Song of Loyalty」 Jeong Mong-ju

PoliticianKR1337 — 1392

A civil official and Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Goryeo period. Maintaining loyalty to the Goryeo dynasty, he was assassinated by Yi Bang-won at Seonjukgyo.

Even if I soak the cold stones of Seonjukgyo with red blood, I shall become a pillar of falling Goryeo and wholly protect my unbending, clear, and straight single-minded devotion!

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

He passed the National Confucian Academy examination in the sixth year of King Gongmin and received the top mark in the civil examination three years later. Jeong Mong-ju's entire life was the embodiment of the Great Learning's principles of investigating things, extending knowledge, making the will sincere, and rectifying the mind. In a memorial to the king he argued that the Four Books—the Classic of Filial Piety, the Analerta, the Mencius, the Great Learning, and the Doctrine of the Mean—must be studied before proceeding to the Six Classics. He understood canonical reading not as personal cultivation but as the core of the ruler's education.

As a Sungkyunkwan professor he trained the next generation. He established the Five District Schools in Gaesong and village schools across the provinces—a consistent pattern of converting what he had read into institutions. The fact that Joseon wholly inherited this educational system proves that his reading laid the scholarly foundation of an entire dynasty.

When Yi Bang-won recited the Hayeoga—"What does it matter this way or that?"—Jeong Mong-ju answered with the Dansimga: "Though this body die and die again, die a hundred deaths / though my bones turn to dust and my soul be gone or not / my single-hearted devotion to my lord—how could it ever fade?" He converted the concept of loyalty read in the classics into a physical oath that would not bend even after the bones became dirt. His death by iron mace on the Seonjuk Bridge completed the poem. For Jeong Mong-ju, reading was a practice completed in death.

Quote

Even if I soak the cold stones of Seonjukgyo with red blood, I shall become a pillar of falling Goryeo and wholly protect my unbending, clear, and straight single-minded devotion!

Greeting

Though this body die and die again, a hundred deaths renewed, my heart toward the king will never change.
In this land there can be no nation but Goryeo.
Loyalty is not a thing of words but proven with one's body.

Roll Call

As a subject of Goryeo, I obey the command.
Where there is a place to lay down my life, I gladly step forward.
With unswerving loyalty, I am prepared.

Deploy

Forward in the name of Goryeo!
Defending the state is a subject's duty — advance!
Though my bones turn to dust, do not retreat!

Victory

The state is preserved. No greater blessing exists.
Heaven will know this victory won by loyalty.
The soldiers' devotion made this day.

Draw

It is not yet over. Steel your hearts.
This is not retreat but preparation for what comes next.
The state is in peril — we cannot stop here.

Defeat

My failing has shaken the state.
I deserve death, but there is still something to protect.
I fall, but my heart toward Goryeo does not bend.

Strike

Strike with undivided loyalty!
He who retreats is a traitor!
Break through for the state!
