「Romance of the Rose」 Jean de Meun

AuthorFR1240 — 1305

A French medieval poet and scholar. His authorship of 18,000 lines continuing the Romance of the Rose — drawing on Ovid and Boethius in an encyclopedic satire — transformed the landscape of medieval literature.

In an era of twisted false desires and reason, only the sublime true meaning of the rose merely silently illuminates our deep human folly.

Quote

In an era of twisted false desires and reason, only the sublime true meaning of the rose merely silently illuminates our deep human folly.

Greeting

The rose is beautiful, but beneath it lie the roots of greed.
Blind love is only the folly of fools. Nature's wisdom is the true lesson.
Do not be fooled by sweet verse. My satirical pen always pierces naked reality.

Deploy

Strip away the pretence! Pierce hypocrisy with reason's dagger!
Tear down the walls of false virtue! Drive satire and cold wit straight to the jugular!
Pass judgement on those blinded by emotion! Wield the blade of truth!

Victory

Reason triumphs — vain illusions have toppled face-down in the mud.
The rose of hypocrisy has been plucked. The wall built on sweet lies has crumbled.
My satire has pierced through the foolishness. A satisfying conclusion.

Draw

There are still too many wallowing in sweet dreams. A stalemate between reason and emotion.
Let us wait for the hypocrites' false logic to tangle itself in knots.
What a farcical play — bowing with elegance while hiding a blade inside.

Defeat

Foolish emotion has swallowed reason whole. My own failing.
The tragedy of an age in which the wisdom of reason is silenced before brute force.
Though I retreat before violence, the ink of satire will never dry. I will indict it in the next chapter.

Strike

Strip the pretence bare!
Reason's judgement!
Cleave through the illusion!
