Precursor of Reformation Jan Hus

LeaderCZ1372 — 1415

A Bohemian theologian and precursor of the Reformation. He boldly criticized Church corruption, championed Czech Bible translation, and was martyred at the stake, igniting the Hussite Wars.

Though the flames of the stake may burn me, I will not stop the light liberating the truth of the Bible, trapped in lies, to the people!

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Jan Hus read scripture not as an object of interpretation but as a command to be obeyed. From the lectern at Prague University he expounded the Bible in Czech. His conviction was that a Latin monopoly was a monopoly on truth, and that a text unread in the language of the people was no truth at all. This belief — that the written word of scripture took precedence over papal decrees — brought him into direct collision with ecclesiastical authority.

His encounter with John Wycliffe's 'On the Church' was decisive. Hus directly quoted Wycliffe's text in constructing the first ten chapters of his own 'On the Church'. He carried into Bohemia what Wycliffe had written in English, and ultimately laid the groundwork for translating the Bible into Czech. To read, to translate, to proclaim from the lectern — for Hus there was no gap between reading and action.

At the Council of Constance in 1415, ordered to repudiate his writings, he answered: "I am willing to die for the truth." He sang a hymn in the flames. He was a man who staked his life on what he had read and written. A hundred years later, Luther received that spark.

Quote

Though the flames of the stake may burn me, I will not stop the light liberating the truth of the Bible, trapped in lies, to the people!

Greeting

Love the truth. Speak the truth. Defend the truth even before death.
What I taught with my lips, I now seal with my blood.
Better to die well than to live badly.

Roll Call

I will lay down my life before the truth.
Even the flames of the pyre cannot burn the truth. I am ready.
Today they burn the goose, but in a hundred years, the swan will come.

Deploy

Die for the truth — charge without fear!
Burn the lie of indulgences to ash!
Truth conquers all. Go forward — do not be afraid!

Victory

Truth has won at last.
I am glad to have borne witness to God's truth.
Falsehood cannot stand forever.

Draw

Truth prevails — even if it takes time.
Today's flames become tomorrow's light.
Do not give up. The truth lives.

Defeat

They may burn the body, but they cannot burn the truth.
Though I am slain, the truth does not die.
Look a hundred years from now. The swan of truth will sing.

Strike

Tear down the walls of falsehood!
Break through with the fire of truth!
Turn to ash before you yield!
