Father of King Gojong of Joseon. He crushed the politics of in-law family domination and led the reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung and a policy of national isolation.

Heungseon Daewongun used art not as an outlet for political frustration but as another expression of the will to power. The orchid paintings he cultivated under the tutelage of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui were not mere pastime. Each brushstroke of the orchid leaves beneath his brush, up to the completion of the distinctive style known as "Seokpa-ran," contained the suppressed spirit of a royal kinsman crushed under the politics of in-law family domination.
When he was detained in Qing China, Heungseon Daewongun spent his time painting orchids. Yet this "passing the time" was not resignation.
