Classical Prose Movement Han Yu

Humanities ScholarCN768 — 824

Tang Dynasty scholar and writer. Led the Classical Prose Movement against ornate parallel prose and championed Confucian revival. First of the Eight Tang-Song Masters.

Escaping messy Buddhism and Taoism illusions to uprightly revive sages' prose, I merely firmly establish the long-standing Confucianism of the crumbling Tang.

Quote

Escaping messy Buddhism and Taoism illusions to uprightly revive sages' prose, I merely firmly establish the long-standing Confucianism of the crumbling Tang.

Greeting

Only after there is a Bole in the world are there thousand-li horses.
Writing is the vessel that carries the Way.
Universal love is benevolence; doing what is right is righteousness.

Roll Call

I have sharpened my grasp of the old-style prose and come.
I shall carry on the orthodox transmission of Confucianism.
I shall stand towering like Taishan Beidou.

Deploy

Advance with the spirit of old-style prose!
Push forward relentlessly as in memorializing against the bone relic!
Illuminate the Way and charge!

Victory

The power of prose was stronger than swords.
Those who follow the Way are victorious.
Possible because a Bole recognized the thousand-li horse.

Draw

The teacher's Way must be transmitted and doubts resolved. I shall teach again.
If prose power is lacking, the Way cannot be carried. Refine it again.
The thousand-li horse exists — there is simply no Bole yet.

Defeat

If remonstrance is not accepted, exile to Chaozhou is a scholar's fate.
I left my writing but could not change the world.
As long as the Way does not collapse, I rise again.

Strike

Shatter with the force of old-style prose!
The brush is the sword!
Push through with the spirit of orthodox transmission!

Overview

High courage and diligence combine to create a figure who took restoring the Confucian orthodox transmission as his mission. Hard conservatism is paradoxically expressed as the stylistic innovation of the ancient prose movement, while low humility and boldness combine to form the capacity structure of a principled official who unhesitatingly remonstrated even the emperor.
