The First Author Enheduanna

AuthorIQBC 2285 — BC 2250

High Priestess of Ur in Sumer and the first author in history to be recorded by name. A daughter of Sargon the Great of the Akkadian Empire, she founded the literary tradition of hymns in praise of the goddess Inanna.

As the first poet to leave my name behind, I shall highly praise only the glory of the great moon goddess Ningal!

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Around 2285 BCE, the high priestess Enheduanna was expelled from the temple at Ur during a rebellion. In that desperate night, she inscribed her own name and suffering directly into a hymn addressed to the goddess Inanna. The line "I, Enheduanna" became the first author's signature in human history.

Sumerian temples already held centuries of accumulated oral hymns. Enheduanna restructured those anonymous songs into forty-two temple hymns, pressing a personal voice into ritual language. In the 'Exaltation of Inanna,' the sudden shift from depicting the goddess's warfare to narrating her own terror on the night of her expulsion marks the moment a divine praise song becomes autobiographical confession.

In an era when prior literature scarcely existed, appreciation for her meant listening to oral tradition and rewriting it under her own name.

Quote

As the first poet to leave my name behind, I shall highly praise only the glory of the great moon goddess Ningal!

Greeting

Guardian of all that is great, O radiant one — I am Enheduanna.
The first named poet in history greets you.
O goddess of war — with savage wings, you cleave the earth.

Roll Call

I have come from the temple of the moon. I am ready.
I will carry out the will of the goddess Inanna.
She who sang all the temples of Sumer stands here.

Deploy

Advance in the light of Inanna!
Roar like a storm and press forward!
Charge with the power of the temple at your back!

Victory

The Queen of Heaven and Earth has blessed us.
A sacred victory. I will record it.
The first poem sings the final triumph.

Draw

I was driven out once before and returned. It will be so again.
The moon waxes and wanes, but it always rises.
Even a lament in war becomes a poem.

Defeat

The pain of the day I was banished from the temple returns.
But the record remains. That is the poet's weapon.
O Inanna, your high priestess has been brought to her knees.

Strike

Receive the wrath of Inanna!
I invoke the ancient incantation!
I shatter you with the power of Sumer!
