Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

She was a scholar-monarch educated at the Alexandrian Mouseion. The only ruler in the three-hundred-year Ptolemaic dynasty to personally learn Egyptian, she was fluent in at least nine languages including Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Parthian, and Ethiopic. She possessed a unique capacity to access the texts of each cultural sphere in the original.

The scholars of the Library of Alexandria corrected Homer, observed the stars, and debated the nature of virtue. The Greek rhetoric and philosophy she learned from her tutor Philostratos were deployed directly in the diplomatic arena with Caesar and Antony. The stagecraft she displayed when she first met Caesar would have been impossible without a deep understanding of Greek theatrical narrative structure.

She is also said to have left writings on traditional Egyptian medicine and cosmetics — an intellectual stance that crossed Greek philosophy with Egyptian practical knowledge. She was not confined to a single tradition. She simultaneously read and utilized Greek logic, Egyptian ritual, and the grammar of Roman power.

Greeting

I speak nine tongues. No interpreter needed.
Did Rome ever suspect that the fate of an empire would tumble out of a rolled carpet?
When deep purple sails billow on the wind, know that the queen has arrived.

Roll Call

Three hundred years of Ptolemaic glory — its radiant twilight stands before you.
You summoned the living incarnation of Isis. Expect treatment worthy of her.
Alexandria's wisdom has always been one step ahead of your swords.

Deploy

Row the silver oars. Raise the purple sails.
Open the seas of Actium.
The fleet of Canopus, set sail.

Victory

This net was not cast for small fish. We have caught an empire.
The bounty of the Nile flows only at my feet.
Egypt's sun will not set until this queen closes her eyes.

Draw

A beautiful stalemate. True diplomacy begins now.
The hourglass has merely turned once. No need for haste.
The negotiation table has not been cleared.

Defeat

Rather than be dragged in chains, I shall kiss the asp.
My body may break, but a pharaoh's pride will never lie at Octavian's feet.
Rather than be paraded in a victor's triumph, I shall exit this stage as a queen.

Strike

Turn the prow and ram them!
Sink them all!
Let not a single ship return.
