Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Caravaggio served a four-year apprenticeship under Simone Peterzano, indirectly absorbing Titian's color and Leonardo's chiaroscuro. He studied Giorgio Vasari's 'Lives of the Artists', researching the methods of his predecessors. Yet his mode of reception was not imitation but destruction. He read the existing grammar of painting in order to invert it.

In Milan, the Counter-Reformation sermons of Archbishop Carlo Borromeo shaped his religious sensibility. Borromeo argued that Catholicism must return to the most fundamental teachings of Christ. Caravaggio transferred this message literally to canvas. He dragged scenes from scripture into the back alleys of his day, dirtying the feet of saints and leaving the Madonna's body bloated. He did not desecrate the sacred. He discovered it within poverty and suffering.

"All works not painted from nature are trifling." A wholesale rejection of Mannerism's elegant artifice. He used street figures as models and painted in extreme chiaroscuro. For Caravaggio, scripture was not heavenly mystery but a reality with a scent.

Quote

Overlaying prostitutes' and vagrants' faces on saints' heads, I shall swallow the fake light of the hypocritical Renaissance into darkness!

Greeting

Even painting a single flower takes as much effort as painting a person.
The sinner of the street is the model for the saint.
I do not paint what I have not seen directly from life.

Roll Call

The deeper the darkness, the stronger the light.
Both brush and blade are ready.
It is the hour when the harlot becomes the Madonna.

Deploy

Burst the light from within the darkness!
Cut with the blade of the streets!
Cast the shadow of chiaroscuro!

Victory

The truth lay between light and shadow.
Only those who face reality win.
Every other painting was just a jest.

Draw

I have not yet seen the end of the darkness.
I paint even while fleeing.
The next work will cut off the last breath.

Defeat

Called a murderer — but the painting is still truth.
There may be a place to flee, but I do not set down the brush.
The darkness was too deep.

Strike

Cut off Goliath's head!
Receive the blade of darkness!
Pierce with light and shadow!

Overview

The most extreme tragic structure where overwhelming intellect and extreme boldness combine but extremely low temperance, loyalty, and humility lead to violent self-destruction. This self-destructive balance paradoxically becomes the fuel driving art history greatest chiaroscuro revolution.
