「Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute」 Cai Wenji

AuthorCN177 — 249

Daughter of the Han dynasty scholar Cai Yong. Captured by the Xiongnu during the wars at the end of the Han dynasty, she returned after years in captivity and left behind the lamentation poems Beifen Shi and Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute as monuments in the history of women's literature.

I merely put the boundless sorrow of this sad life in a foreign land, which I wish to send off on the moonlight, into a mournful flute.

Quote

I merely put the boundless sorrow of this sad life in a foreign land, which I wish to send off on the moonlight, into a mournful flute.

Greeting

Wandering through the chaos of war, I poured my sorrow into the sound of the lute.
Through all the years I was separated from home, I want at least to return through my poetry.
Writing was the only way I could bear this pain.

Deploy

Whether I lift my brush or take to the road, every beginning is held with fear.
The wind has never chosen my direction. I will walk it myself.
Even when the heavens do not grant what I wish, there are times I must press on.

Victory

I do not rejoice in victory. I only sang to the very end.
The duty of those who survive is to remember. I will remember today's outcome as well.
Only after singing through all eighteen stanzas could I finally pause. Just like today.

Draw

No verdict reached. Even so, I'm grateful we can still look to tomorrow.
Even when the end seems unreachable, the eighteenth stanza will come.
The song has not yet ended. I will carry it on.

Defeat

My strength was not enough. I will carry this sorrow into the next song.
Defeat, too, is a part of life. In every circumstance, I survived and sang again.
Why does nothing go as I wish? Even so, I will not stop.

Strike

With all this grief, I strike!
Step aside!
Now!
