「Ethics」 Baruch Spinoza

Humanities ScholarNL1632 — 1677

A Dutch rationalist philosopher. Excommunicated from his Jewish community, he ground lenses for a living while writing the *Ethics*, and opened the horizon of modern philosophy with his pantheistic identification of God and Nature.

A free human who gains insight into the necessity of nature simply never suffers any agony over vain death.

Quote

A free human who gains insight into the necessity of nature simply never suffers any agony over vain death.

Greeting

Happiness is not the reward of virtue, but virtue itself.
A free man thinks of nothing less than of death.
All things are in God, and without God nothing can exist or be conceived.

Roll Call

I have sharpened my thoughts while grinding lenses.
I shall prove it in the geometrical order.
I shall view things from the standpoint of eternity.

Deploy

Master the passions with reason and advance!
Press forward in the geometrical order!
Establish the ethics of freedom!

Victory

The light of reason has conquered the darkness of passion.
The intellectual love of God overflows.
A victory seen under the aspect of eternity.

Draw

A passion can only be overcome by a greater passion.
The proof is not yet complete.
The order of necessity must be read.

Defeat

Even excommunicated, truth cannot be excommunicated.
I shall grind lenses and wait.
To understand sorrow is to be free of it.

Strike

Break the chains of passion!
Fire the light of reason!
Pierce through with necessity!
