A French sculptor. Called the father of modern sculpture, he revolutionarily expressed human emotion and dynamism in the human body.

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Rodin carried Dante's 'Divine Comedy' in his pocket. "I lived with Dante for a year, alone with him, drawing the eight circles of Hell," he recalled. That year of residence condensed into 'The Gates of Hell.' Ugolino's agony and the embrace of Paolo and Francesca from the text rose as human bodies in bronze.

His reverence for Victor Hugo began in adolescence. Having read 'Notre-Dame de Paris,' 'Les Orientales,' and 'Les Contemplations,' he owned about twenty of Hugo's works. Baudelaire's 'Les Fleurs du mal' lay open on his workbench. After traversing Homer's Greece, Dante's Italy, Shakespeare's England, and Rousseau's France through reading, all that literary experience concentrated into human forms on clay.

"I invent nothing. I rediscover." For Rodin, reading was the preliminary stage of sculpture. Finding again in stone and bronze the suffering Dante described, the tragedy Hugo depicted, and the beauty of evil Baudelaire captured — that was his entire body of work.

Quote

Carving the churning figures on the cold marble Gates of Hell, I shall surely awaken the passionate vitality of sleeping humanity!

Greeting

The human being comes first; the artist comes second.
Patience is also a form of action.
Nothing in nature is ugly.

Roll Call

The marble is waiting for me.
I will approach this in the pose of The Thinker.
I stand before The Gates of Hell.

Deploy

Open The Gates of Hell!
Chip away everything unnecessary!
Push forward with the weight of bronze!

Victory

Only the characterless is ugly. Today was beautiful.
Waste no experience, and there is no such thing as defeat.
The truth inside the stone has finally revealed itself.

Draw

More patience is needed. That too is a form of action.
The Burghers of Calais are still unfinished.
I will chisel once more.

Defeat

Art does not submit to public opinion.
One must live, love, and begin again.
I will not put down the chisel.

Strike

Receive the fist of The Thinker!
Feel the blow of bronze!
The Gates of Hell swing open!
