Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

Born the son of an innkeeper in the Bohemian village of Nelahozeves, Dvořák grew up surrounded by folk dances and songs. He named Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert as the composers he most admired, and in his early years was also drawn to the orchestral language of Wagner and Liszt.

In 1875, Johannes Brahms noticed his work during an Austrian government scholarship review. Brahms introduced him to the publisher Simrock and advised greater structural rigor. Dvořák absorbed the advice while holding on to the melodic naturalness he drew from Bohemian rural dance and song. Where Smetana had opened the door to Czech national music, Dvořák carried it onto the world stage in symphonic form.

During his tenure as director of the National Conservatory in New York, he encountered Black spirituals and Native American melodies. He declared that "in the Negro melodies of America I discover all that is needed for a great and noble school of music." The ear that had started with Bohemian folk songs heard the same depth in the songs of peoples an ocean away.

Quote

Music is the language of an affectionate soul. Playing the violin, I simply warmly sing the soul of Bohemia.

Greeting

I am just a simple Czech musician, nothing more.
I pray looking up at the sky by the window, and study alongside birds and flowers.
A good melody is a gift from heaven, but making it great is the craftsman's work.

Roll Call

A melody came to me during a walk. Let us begin.
Mozart was like sweet sunshine. I shall try to shine as well.
I compose as though in prayer. I am ready.

Deploy

Let the melodies of home ring out!
Open the gates of the New World!
Breathe a soul into every instrument!

Victory

A good melody came, and I shaped it well.
The melodies of the Negro spirituals have opened a new world.
God has helped us.

Draw

Melodies find you on their own. Just wait.
A half-finished symphony is still a symphony.
The bird outside will show me the next melody.

Defeat

Even a simple musician has his hard days.
I have come so far, yet I miss home.
I shall sit by the window again and pray.

Strike

Show the power of Bohemia!
Charge toward the New World!
Sweep through in one stroke!
