Sultan of Peace Al-Kamil

PoliticianEG1180 — 1238

The fourth sultan of the Ayyubid dynasty in Egypt. He met Francis of Assisi and pursued the diplomatic resolution of the Crusades, ceding Jerusalem through a peace agreement.

A generous tolerance is a far greater victory in protecting the peace of Jerusalem than cruel revenge, isn't it.

Cultural Journey

How cultural experiences shaped this figure's life

According to the historian al-Maqrizi, Al-Kamil placed scholars' beds next to his own and debated through the night. He sometimes prepared difficult questions in law and grammar to test them. He took broad interest in medicine, astronomy, and Sufi mysticism, with a particular fondness for religious poetry. His was a mode of learning that digested knowledge through dialogue rather than solitary reading.

In the midst of the 1219 siege of Damietta, Al-Kamil invited Francis of Assisi — a friar from the enemy camp — to his court. When Francis proposed a trial by fire, Al-Kamil responded with tolerance. The scene of a sultan seating an enemy's thinker for free conversation during a Crusade captures the moment his intellectual curiosity overrode military hostility.

After routing the Fifth Crusade, he provided food to the defeated survivors. Through negotiation with Frederick II, he ceded Jerusalem without war. He was a sultan who placed dialogue above force.

Quote

A generous tolerance is a far greater victory in protecting the peace of Jerusalem than cruel revenge, isn't it.

Greeting

Negotiation before the sword. That is how I returned Jerusalem.
Sending provisions even to a defeated enemy — that is the law of Islam.
I greet you as one who carries the blood of Saladin.

Roll Call

I will be faithful to the duties of a sultan.
I will send a letter first, then make my judgment.
I am ready.

Deploy

With the Nile at our backs — spread the formation!
Protect the holy land, but spare needless bloodshed!
Show the Franks what we stand for!

Victory

Even in victory, never forget generosity.
The will of God was with us.
Now is the time to open the negotiating table.

Draw

What war cannot resolve, diplomacy will finish.
The door of negotiation remains open even to the Crusaders.
Next time, I will settle this without bloodshed.

Defeat

Even if the walls of Cairo tremble, my resolve does not.
Saladin did not collapse after a single defeat.
I will rise again.

Strike

Sons of the Nile — charge!
Strike down those who desecrate the holy land!
Advance under the Ayyubid banner!
